A great poker top is durable, looks fantastic, feels like a million dollars, and most importantly lets cards glide across it like a sheet of ice. If you cant slide a card from one side of the table by just sneezing on it, then its time to change it!
So what surface works best? Felt? Casino Felt? Pool Table Felt? Velvet?...
So many choices, so lets take the guess work out and give you a review of the most common and overall best poker table covering to use.
First of all for those of you building from scratch and need a foam padded underlay you will need to use a 6mm (or 1/4 Inch) CLOSED cell foam fitted over your table base for the fabric to then be stretched over. Closed Cell foam looks like this:
Why you ask? well two reasons.
1. Closed cell foam will not absorb liquid spilt on the table like normal foam will.
2. Foam underlay makes it much easier to get under and pickup your cards and poker chips. Ever dropped your credit card on a flat surface and tried frantically to get under it to pick it up? Same thing!
This foam should set you back around $40 aud (around $36 usd) that's for a sheet 1200mm x 2000mm (or enough to cover a 6ft x 3ft table) make sure its fairly firm and not too soft otherwise it will feel like your playing on a sponge!

For first time builders, or those not using a thorough tutorial, a foam pad under the table cloth is overlooked pretty easily, despite the importance you've pointed out in your article. The littlest things make the biggest differences.
